Cabinet tips Regardless of whether you need to do something about your cabinets or whether you have to, there are a number of different options available to you. Depending on your budget, time constraints and personal preferences, you can choose to: Replace the cabinets, Refinish or restore the cabinets, Reface the cabinets Replacing the cabinets means that you'll pretty much be doing an entire kitchen remodeling job. When you replace the cabinets, you tear out whatever is there and replace it with something new. This may be the only option available to you if the cabinets that you currently have are falling apart and no longer are structurally sound. But replacing the cabinetry can be an expensive proposition, because you will most likely be replacing the countertops, backsplash, sink and maybe your appliances as well. Even with the most affordable cabinets and using your existing kitchen footprint, a job like this can run thousands and thousands of dollars. That doesn't mean you shouldn't replace your cabinets. It's just a reality check that it's pricey. Refinishing or restoring cabinets means that your shelves and drawers are structurally sound and are made of quality materials, but may have some dings, stains or other imperfections that can be corrected through a refinishing or restoration process. This is something that can be done by the home ''handyman'' or ''handywoman'' if they have the time and interest, or it can also be done by a contractor that you hire. Oftentimes a good cleaning and refinishing/restoring job can make the cabinets shine and look brand new. This option is good if the cabinets are made from a good wood and just need some sprucing up. Refacing means that you literally put a new ''face'' on the doors and drawers or the cabinets, either by physically choosing and installing new ones, or by working with a contractor who can take different materials and adhere them to your existing cabinet doors and drawers. When you reface the cabinets, you are not limited by the type of wood or surface -- you can totally change the color and style. Sometimes this option is a good compromise between replacing the kitchen cabinets and refinishing them. |
