Using simulated material serves 2 reasons, First is your footing is minimal and the second is that your installer wont need as much skills than a highly skilled Mason may have. The brick and stone that are not simulated may or may not depending on the height need a larger footing but when installing the actual whole brick or stone a larger footing is needed and a skilled mason. The myth that simulated is cheaper may not be true due to all the extra labor it takes to prepare for the simulated brick or stone therefore the gap between the real and simulated are very close in price.
